Justice For Greenwood

Lush partnered with the non-profit organization Justice for Greenwood to launch a campaign aimed at raising awareness. As part of the initiative, Lush created a special soap, with 100% of the profits (excluding tax) donated directly to Justice for Greenwood.

BACKGROUND

Before the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Greenwood was one of the most prosperous, organized, and successful Black communities
in United States history. The Greenwood neighborhood, which included the renowned Black Wall Street, was home to around 11,000 Black people, as well as hundreds of thriving Black-owned businesses and organizations. Then, overnight from May 31st to June 1st, a white mob of several thousand Tulsans attacked the Greenwood district, destroying the neighborhood.

ILLUSTRATION

I created the artwork for this campaign by illustrating some of the key members of the fight for reparations for Greenwood. Within their silhouettes I’ve illustrated the initial Tulsa race massacre on the left and then with each person shows the passage of time and in turn the slow process of rebuilding and fighting for the community.

This project was created under the creative direction of the Lush Cosmetics design team.

Justice For Grassy Narrows

Lush partnered with Free Grassy Narrows, a network supporting the Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation's fight for justice, to launch an awareness campaign. As part of the initiative, Lush created a bath bomb, donating 100% of the profits (excluding tax) to support the Grassy Narrows community.

BACKGROUND

Asubpeeschoseewagong First Nation (Grassy Narrows) in northern Ontario was a vibrant and largely self-sufficient community with 95% employment in occupations directly tied to the river and land in which they’re situated. That was, however, until a paper company heartlessly dumped 9,000 kg of untreated mercury into their river system between 1962 and 1970—resulting in one of Canada’s worst environmental disasters.

ILLUSTRATION

I created the artwork for this campaign by illustrating some of the key members of the fight for reparationsfor Grassy Narrows. Within their silhouettes I’ve illustrated the effects of the initial mercury poisoning on the left and then with each person shows the passage of time and in turn the slow process of cleaning the water and fighting for the community.

This illustration is meant to represent the hope that has come out of fighting for justice though the fight is nowhere close to being won. There is hope that with more awareness and advocacy, the victims of the environmental disaster will finally have retributions.

This project was created under the creative direction of the Lush Cosmetics design team.
